BIRKOLOGY AGAIN
Awapuni Steeplechase i Success ' YOUNG CHARLES AND * TIDEWAITER By Telegraph.—Krom The Watcher PALMERSTON N., June 23. The winter meeting of the Manawatu j Racing Club concluded at Awapum today in fine but overcast and very cold weather. The principal event, the Awapuni Steeplechase, again went to Birkology, after a fine display over the fences. Improved jumping by Tidewaiter saw him take the Raukawa Hurdles, and Dulieu's stable also won the principal flat race with Young Charles. Sceptre scored in the sprint. There was a good attendance for an off day and the totaliza tor . handled £17.967 for the day, compared with £15,611/10/- on the Thursday last rear. The total for the meeting was £42,882/10/-, against £35.719 last May, an increase of £4163/10/-. The going was soft and slow. Son and Heir Easily. The somewhat disappointing Son and Heir for once did everything right in the ■ Akitio Steeplechase, and was always going too well for the favourite, Manteau. Master Hector went with’ the winner for a round and then broke down, leaving Manteau to run with Son and Heir. They kept together till the second last fence, but it was obvious that Son and Heir could draw away when he wished and he did so over the last two fences to score easily. Manteau held on for secone! against Game Pit. the only other to complete the course. Moonlight Bay lost his rider and Car Leaf pulled up. Form Confirmed, The first day’s winner, Kanui Te Pai, proved his form by taking the Rangiotu Trial decisively. Cheetah tried to steal the race and was still well clear entering the straight, where Ocean Breeze was endeavouring to get up on the inner. Cheetah began to stop over the last bit and Kanui Te Pai, finishing resolutely from five or six- places back in the running, got up to win going away. Ocean Breeze did not get a clear run on the rail at the finish, hut was a close third and there was a big gap to the fourth horse, le Oriko, who, in turn, was clear of Rangitikei, Moderate, Fox Tower, Henry ot Huntingdon and Rich Blood. Henry ot Huntingdon, who drew No. 2, was the last to leave the barrier. Sound Display. The principal steeplechase again went to Birkology, who gave another sound display over the fences. Lady Callaghan tried to win all the way, but Birkology, who had always been handy, ran up to her three fences from home and, though the mare held him there with a better jump, she had no chance with him over the concluding stages of the journey, and he won with something in hand. Riotous was a poor third and Ruling Star farther back. All-tlic-way Win. Young Chariest, who had run last in the hack hurdle race the first day, scored an all-thc-wny win in the Hokowhitu Handicap at expense of the favourite, The Monarch. Trench Law tan with Young Charles all the way to the straight from The Monarch and Aurora’s Star and, as they ran for the judge, Young Charles drew clear to score easily from The Monarch, who stayed on better than Trench Law. Laughing Song ran past the Others from the back for fourth, and then came Aurora's Star and Colonel Bogey. Du Maurier, ridden in behind, ran up outer of The Monarch and Aurora’s Star nt the half, but he failed to produce his first day’s form. Much-improved Jumping. Giving a greatly-improved display of jumping, Tidewaiter was always a possibility in the Raukawa Hurdles, and he stayed on just too well at the finish for Malacca. Gay Fox, made all the running and, though attended early by Jungle King and Hot Shot, he was in sole charge after the first six furiongs. . Malacca, who had jumped into third position at the winning post the first time, took on Gay Fox approaching the straight, where Tidewaiter was handy, Tidewaiter and Malacca jumped the la e t. fence Just ahead of Gay Fox. and on the flat Tidewaiter just, held his own. Hot Shot was .a poor third, with Great Quex fourth, then Gay Fox, Segra and Mataroa. Hot Shot wiis interfered with when Gay Mimic made a bad jump at the fourth fence. Student Prince had run up handy down the back but faded out again in tne concluding stages, his rider having, lost his irons. There was a change of rider on both the winner and runner-up from the first day, Mcßae replacing Baker, while McLaughlin rode Malacca, Lord being required for Mataroa. Won Going Away, Deflation won well in the hack sprint. He was always handy to the leaders, Sweet Anne and Cheetah, who were followed into the straight by Ringling, but Deflation, sticking to the rails, got through to win going away from Dainty Dell, who finished on from the back to cut out Sweet Anne from second money. Valiant Lady was well up fourth, clear of the others, who were headed by Sporting Sister (last away), Ringling, Cheetah and Distress Signal. Sceptre Easily. The promoted hack, Sceptre, made no race of the Mcßae Handicap at the finish Screen Star set a pace that had most of the field in trouble a long way from home, and Sceptre followed him to the straight, where she took charge and won easily. Night Eruption finished on better than Screen Star for second, and Winsome Ln was fourth, followed by Colincamps, Star Zone, Diana Tetrix and Windsor Chief. The top-weights, Noble Fox and Lord Cavendish, were well back all the way and never looked likely. Won From the Back. Coming right from the rear of the field, Rcnascor took the last race with a convincing run over the last three furlongs. Auburn Lad endeavoured to win from end to end but, though he lasted till the last half-furlong, he had no chance with Renascor, and finally Catanach, who had been just in behind in the running, also wore him down for second. Acrobat was fourth, clear of the ruck. Others prominent in the running, Kinkajou, Rhodes and Colibri, faded out. Details Of The Racing AKITIO HACK AND HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE, of £l.lO.
