BRITISH SONGS

Recital By Mr. Temple White And Miss Myra Sawyer One of the most enjoyable and crowded meetings of the year was held yesterday afternoon by members of the Women’s Social Progress Movement, when Mr. Temple White gave an annotated recital of British songs, assisted by Miss Myra Sawyer as soloist. Mr. White described the various songs and told the story of their composers, who ranged from Sir Edward Elgar to Vaughan Williams. The programme included compositions serious, sad and gay. Miss Sawyer sang delightfully, and the whole recital was a musical treat. It concluded with the singing of Mr. White’s own musical competition, “Lullaby of Roses,” to the words written by Mrs. Knight, Karori. This was a charming lyrical piece and was greatly enjoyed. Mrs. R. Pearson, who was in the chair, thanked Mr. White for giving bis time to the recital, and Miss Sawyer for her beautiful singing. She said that not only had the afternoon provided a short release from the worries of the day, but it was the means of raising a sum of money to go toward the soldiers’ tea at the Y.W.C.A. on July 6, when the members would be the hostesses. Mr. White said there was “nothing like music” to take one's mind away from the war. He was finding it increasingly difficult to maintain choirs, but considered that people needed more and better music in these times than ever before. Mrs. Watson led the devotions, and Mrs. Bennie proposed the hearty vote of thanks to Mr. White and Miss Sawyer.
