ATTACK ON RUSSIA
Effect On American Opinion BRUSHING ASIDE OF PLEDGE The effect which Germany’s attack on Russia would have on American opinion was referred to by Sir Evelyn Wrench, founder of the Overseas League and the EnglishtSpeakihg Union at a civic reception accorded him and Lady Wrench in Wellington yesterday. “I have never had any sympathy for the Russian Government, but, during the last day or so we have witnessed one of the most appalling political acts in history,” he said. “Nazi Germany, after having given Russia its solemn pledge, has now, when it suited itself, brushed it aside. I believe that this act of Nazi Germany in attacking Russia, and throwing over her friendship, will have a very great ’effect in the United States.” Discussing the attitude of the United States toward the war generally. Sir Evelyn said that after speaking and lecturing to various organizations throughout America he had been stirred by the deep sympathy shown for the British Commonwealth. “I have never experienced, in the 35 years i have known the United States, such a feeling of almost loving friendship that is shown to the British visitor, to the United States.” he added. “The experience was most moving. I asked a leading American before I left to give me a message to take to the people of New Zealand, and that message which I give you now is representative of a very large section of American opinion. He said to me: ‘Tell them that the United States is in the war now, and we will be more in the war soon—the vast majority of our people are determined, like you, that Hitler shall not triumph.’”
