ASHBURTON MEETING

Steeplechase To Golden Glow GAY PARADE SUCCEEDS Dominion Special Service. ASHBURTON, June 21. The weather was fine and cold and the attendance fair for the Aehburton County Racing Club's meeting. Hie track was greasy. The totalizator handled £15,703/10/- against £14,710 last year. „ , . „ A protest against Gay Parade in the Maronan Handicap was made by E. J. Ellis, .trainer of! the second horse 11 aitoru on the grounds that Gay Parade was not trained by the owners, Broad and Wilson, as stated in the race book but by F. T. Buchanan, who bred and formerly raced him. A statement was put in by Broad and Wilson to the effect that Buchanan held a third interest in the horse and this was duly registered with the Racing Conference. The stewards thereupon adjourned the hearing of the protest till eleven tomorrow to allow of the necessary information being obtained from the Conference and in the meantime the paving out of all dividends was held up. Should it be found that Buchanan holds an interest, no doubt everything will be deemed to be in order and there is not likely to be any change in the placings. , , , Night Dress was the early leader m the Hinds Hurdles, and he and Donadea raced abreast through the back stretch and to the home turn, well clear of Fuudy Bay, with another gap to Survey. Donadea shook off Night Dress turning for home, and Fuudy Bay ran into second place, with Survey close up, and Mungatoon making up leeway. Donadea was first over the last fence, but soon succumbed to Fundy Bay, who won going away. Mungatoon finished on into third place, a length in front of Survey, with Night Dress half a length away.

Valeron justified his staunch favouritism for the Mayfield Hack Handicap by an impressive win. He had only Lights Out and Good Health behind him half a mile from home and, strangely enough, these three filled the’places. Avenal and Nightglass were the early leaders and the latter, under a strong hold, piloted the field to the home turn, where she weakened. Valeron then moved up smartly to be in front, entering the straight from Lights Out, who also put in a fast run on the fence. These two had the finish to themselves, Valeron’ always holding his rival safe. Good Ilealth made his usual late run to get up for third money. The seven acceptors for the Dromore Hack Steeplechase paraded but only three got round without mishap. Recollection was the first to go out, falling at the first of the stand double, the fourth fence on the journey. Two fences later Waka, when in the lead with The Sandwichman, ran off and the latter turned a somersault. Panara fell over The Sandwichmnn. This left Golden Glow. Superex and Guste to carry on and they completed- the course in that order. Golden Glow having n comfortable win. The Sandwichman suffered a broken hind leg, caused, it was thought, by Panara landing on him, and was destroyed. Gay Parade was first out in the Maronan Handicap and led throughout. He was followed into the straight by Waitoru, Auctor, S'hani Boy, Boloyna and Flame Queen. AVaitoru and Boloyna reduced the gap in the run to the post but Gay Parade was not seriously troubled. Boloyna finished 1 better than Waitoru for second, but just failed to get up.
