BIRKOLOGY JUMPS WELL

Manawatu Steeplechase FOXIANA’S HURDLES Gladynev And Gayest Son Win On Flat (Br The Watcher.) Good jumping and solid finishes by Birkology and Foxiana featured the principal jumping events on the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club's winter meeting at Awapuni on .Saturday. On the flat the two main races were won by Gladynev and Gayest Sou, a feature of these races being that they were both won in similar style, by the wearing down ot the pacemaker. The weather was fine, and though ram threatened late in the afternoon, it held off except for a light shower. . The going was soft as the- result of a. series of hard frosts. There was a large attendance, and the totalizator handled £24,965/10A as against the Saturday total of £23,10 i 10/- last year, which was the second day, the meeting last year also being held in May. The Saturday total for the Wanganui meeting on the course at the beginning of the month was £25,407. After the running of the Rangitira Hurdles, M. Coon, the rider of Hot Shot, was admonished for allowing his mount to drift too far out of the running. A Comfortable Win.

Regicide scored a comfortable win in the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdle Race. Reaching the front early in the race, he was always running and jumping well, and though the favourite, Malacca, ran up to him about the half-mile, and was actually on terms at the last fence, he had no chance with Regicide in the run to the judge. He was able to hang on for second money against Cartoonist, who had always been handy to the leader, and Pekoe was a creditable fourth after being prominent throughout. A Good Dividend.

With four scratchings in the Rangitane Plate the division was avoided, though in the large field of 24 only a few ever had any chance. The race was won well at a good price by Bendemeer, who finished on much too solidly for his opponents, though he was fortunate to secure a run through on the fence all the way. Athenian and Swell Chance made the running, with Molly Malone, Sly Girl,Blue Lagoon and Ata Puwhero all weil placed, but by the time they had run to the home turn Bendemeer had moved through on the fence into a handy position in behind the leaders, and when they swung out entering. the straight he took full advantage of the opportunity and went on to win going away from Swell Chance, who was being rapidly overhauled by Salvation. Salvation, who was favourite, would have been harder had she got. a better run. Birkology Too Good.

Both Birkology and Cherry Plum were well handled in the Manawatu Steeplechase, but whereas Cherry Plum ran. handily to the leaders all the kvay Birkology was allowed to drop out of'it when settled down, and it was only over the last three fences that he put in his claim. When he did he proved too solid a stayer for the favourite Cherry Plum. _ Birkology gave a fine exhibition of jumping specially when the pace was on, but Cherry Plum, though giving a good display, mixed it at one or two fences and at one in particular, the logs going out of the straight the last time, only a well schooled jumper would have survived. Gaine Pit and Master Hector were the only others to complete the course, but they were not class enough for the leading pair. Brigadore fell at the sod wall the first time round and brought down Ruling Star and Lady Callaghan hit hard at the same fence when in front on the last round and tossed her rider, incidentally interfering with the winner as he was coming up behind her. Narrow But Decisive Win.

Glaclynev had a Barrow but decisive win in the Manawatu Winter Cup, his head margin over Du Maurier at the post being all his rider desired to -win by. Du Maurier led all the way, and setting a sound pace, had most of the others in trouble before reaching_ the straight, where Glaclynev was coming at him, hut Trench Law was retiring. Gladynev gradually overhauled the leader, and won nicely with a bit in hand. The Monarch who was in the rear in the first mile, finished on for a poor third over Laughing Song, who was followed by Trench Law and Aurora’s Star. Aurora’s Star drifted on the home turn. A Solid Performance. Foxiana was responsible for a very solid effort in winning the Rangitira Hurdles. Restrained in behind the pacemakers Majority and Great Quex. he was still in behind Great Quex at the last hurdle, Majority having retired at the half mile. Once over, Foxiana came on to win going away from Great Quex who weakened. Hot Shot who was kept a long way out of it in the early running put in a strong run over the last half; and though he had made up a lot of ground he was unable to do better than a very creditable third. He would have been harder to beat had he been better placed in the running. Segra, Student Prince and Travail finished in line for fourth place, and then came Tidewaiter and Limbohm. Limbohm was prominent much earlier in the running than usual, but he did not do quite so well from the turn home as his running suggested. Tidewaiter jumped very badly, though he was doing better toward the finish. Win for the Topweiglit. Sceptre confirmed her recent good form by taking the hack sprint under topweight in good l style. The public went for Broughton’s mount, Ohmaha, and he flattered his supporters by leading clear to the straight where he was soon tackled and beaten by an outsider in Deflation. Then Sceptre put in her claim from further back and she ran on to win weL. Ohmaha weakened badly, but was still able to get third, with Distress Signal fourth, and then Auburn Lad, Hasten and' Dainty Dell. Hasten had shown up prominently to the straight but he was outside several horses, and he did not run on Return to Form. Gayest. Son returned to form Io win Ibe Rongotea Handicap from the favourite Battlegain. Battlegain began well and endeavoured to win from end to end but Gayest. Son followed him into the straight and gradually wore him down. None of the others was ever likely, Star Zone 'being a poor third with Lutamst, Night Eruption, Diana Tetrix and Augment following. ' Surprise in the Last. A big surprise was forthcoming in the last race when the 14th favourite, Kanui Te Pai, beat the well-fancied Ocean Breeze. Queen Cardine and Ocean Breeze made all the running but swung n little wide entering the straight, where Kanui Te Pai, who had always been handy in behind, made the most, of the oiqiortunity and gradually worked his way through to snatch victory from Ocean Breeze on jjie post. The latter was a bit unlucky in being pushed out. by Queen Cardine, who finished weakest of the three. Little Margot, Catanaeh. Tati; urn. Colerica ajjd Moderate did best of the others. The favourite. Kinkajou, ran a very poor race, plugging along in the roar throughout. Details Of The Racing NGATA HACK AND HUNTERS’ HURDLES, of £l5O. One mile and a halt. 3 KKGICIDE, A. H. N.
