PRACTICE WITH RIFLE

South Canterbury Home

Guard

Members of sections of the South Canterbury Home Guard speak highly of the advantage and experience they have gained travelling over some of the rough mountainous country of Mt. Cook region where deer provided the men with live target practice. For the training of the guardsmen in this work the services of fields officers connected with deer destruction work of the Internal Affairs Department were eu gaged. In a report to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, the officers said a wonderful insight was given the guardsmen in mountain range climbing and in spying out and shooting the elusive thar and chamois.

f . .“The mon of the parties,” file report continued, “got in their weekend exitedition 15 thar and nine chamois. P>ut it was their experience in scaling the ranges and ‘potting’ deer on the heights that counted with the men. Thev were loud in their praise of the opportunilies afforded them. Tn addition, instruction was given the guardsmen in how to walk on the ranges, carrying flic rille, and how and when to shoot. The men profited greatly from their experiences and naturally hope to enjoy further similar expeditions.”
