BEAU CIEL WINS

Raukawa Handicap At

Otaki

SPRINT TO NOBLE FOX

Investments Increase

(By

The Watcher.)

The improved Beau Pere three-year-old Beau Ciel added to his record on Saturday by winning the Raukawa Handicap at Otaki against three opponents, one of whom, Sir Crusoe, broke down. The other open event was won by Noble Fox. Racing began in line weather with sunshine, but after the second event there was a change to cold and overcast conditions, though except for a light shower it remained tine. There was a large attendance, specially from M elliugtou, and for seven races the totalizator turnoici reached £18,0(17 (win £9SO6; place £8201) an increase of £2260 over last year for eight races. The going was in very good order. 8. Waddell was in good form, riding three winners, and 11. Dulieu s stable won a double. Surprise in Hurdles. Baron Bold, favourite for the hurdles, gave trouble at the start and eventually was completely left, taking no part in the running. It was a bad start loi punters, and the winner, Regicide paid nearly a score on the win machine, as well as a good place price, with the other placed horses, Colibn and Golden Memory, also at good odds. Except that Haibour Bar made the early pace, the placed horses were always in the leading bunch, and over the last bit Regicide and Colibri sorted themselves out. Once o\er the last fence Regicide drew away to win decisively. Golden Memory hung on for a good third, but Corroboree, fairly I well up in the early running, was a Jong | way back fourth, and the others never had I any chance. Master Cyklon fell at the | lirst fence. Maiden Favourite Fails. I Riiudess a solid favourite for the maidI en event, failed to do better than third after being well up all the way. the I race was won easily by the third choice, Lucky Lulu, who was at good odds, Site ; ran lip handy on the fence early, and . when the straight was reached she had i run to the front from .Ringless and went ! on to win comfortably. The Wanton came from the rear to cut out Ringless for the second prize and Elusory, always . prominent, was fourth, then Moderate I and Ata Puwhero. The last-named made I I he pace to Ihe turn, but hung badly, letting the winner through on the fence. A Keen Finish. Jumping away smartly Sceptre endeavoured to win the hack seven all the way l and nearly succeeded, but after sbaking off I’itmark she was unable to stall on the challenge of Talenta. The latter bad moved up very handy at the half, and when she challenged in the straight she and Sceptre drew away to fight out a keen finish. , War Credit came on for a fair third, with Little Margot fourth and Pitmark next, the latter weakening from the three furlongs. . „ Beau Ciel Wins Well. Beau Ciel scored an attractive win in the Raukawa Handicap, '’taking. on solidly when challenged. The winner led early, but the running was soon taken up by Sir Crusoe. At the five furlongs Beau Ciel. who was travelling very well, was allowed to run to the front, and she was dear round the home turn, where Sir Crusoe dropped right out, and Gladynov followed Beau Ciel, into .the straight. r.la'dyne'v 'threw out a strong challenge, but Beau Ciel was always going just too well for him. The Monarch was a handy third. Sir Crusoe pulled up very lame. .... , »-• • ■ Myarion s Good hnusli. The hack distance event was won well by Myarion, whose recent form suggested early success. Pretty Lass made all the running, and was joined by Courting. They made play till well into the straight, where Myarion, always handy, put in her claim, wide out. She soon overhauled the leading pair and went on to win going away. Courting was just able to head Pretty Lass. Acrobat, who drifted in the middle stages, was running on well again into fourth, and was probably .a bit unlucky, but none of ( the others flattered and the favourite, Sanction, was beginning to drift from her good running position long before they reached the straight. A Stable Double. Noble Fox brought off a stable and owner’s double when he wou the Huia Handicap. He secured a line run ou the fence throughout and after the lightweight pacemakers had retired he was in front before reaching the straight. Here Surveyor-General, who had always been fairly handy, put in a claim, but he never had any chance of catching the winner. Endorsement was only a fair third, just ahead of Lady Montana, I hen the pacemaker Grandora, and Night Eruption. Night Eruption was with .Surveyor-Gen-eral in the running; but she failed to come on over the last two furlongs. Millie was very slow away and though she ran up handy, she faded out again. Surprise in the Last. Star Zone won the concluding event to pay nearly double figures. Her success was no Huke, for she ran away from the field in the straight. Sweet Anne, Parlato ami Ringling made the running, but they all hung out entering the straight leaving a gap for Star Zone, of which she made full use. She was in front in a few strides, and ran on to win by several lengths. Parlato hung on better than Sweet Anne, and Leighon Rei was fourth, with Calliope next. The hot favourite, Ringling, was very wide out when the leaders hung, ami she never threatened danger in the run home. Tractometer was beaten half a mile from home. * As is well known, soldiers on active service are not allowed to give the location of their unit when writing home. In the last war many dodges were tried to overcome this handicap, one and the most famous being ’’Kat Apples” for the B.F.F. base camp. The other day a letter was received from a New Zealander and in it he said : "Of course I am no!, allowe'l to tel! you where wo are but if you look up what ran second to Lady ’Pinkie "U December II last you will know." We looked it up. It was Olympus.
