AIRLINE SURPRISES AT WASHDYKE

Secret Flight’s Sprint DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP INQUIRY (Bv Telegraph— Press Association, i . TIMARU, May 17. For the concluding day of the South Canterbury winter meeting, the weather was fine and the attendance large. Investments totalled £19,110/10/-, against £15,741/10/- last year. The total for the meeting was £31,8(58/10/-, against £24,143 last year, an increase of £7725/10/-. A meeting of the judicial committee was held concerning the Duke of Gloucester Cup, which was run on the first day. The evidence revealed that there was some doubt whether G. Paul, owner and rider of the winning horse, had a gentleman rider's certificate. It was decided that the stake, cup and miniatures be impounded till the matter is cleared up.

Green Boa repeated his first day's performance by winning the Pukaki Hurdles. He had only one horse behind him five furlongs from home, but then moved up smartly to the leaders, Fundy Bay, Donndea, and Waka, and had charge entering the straight from Fundy Bay, Donadea, and Dividend. Donadea made another game attempt, but Green Boa always held him at bay. These two had the finish practically to themselves. Ann Mie justified her win favouritism in the .Southburn Hack Handicap by a decisive win. She got away smartly, and, after Guilder led to the straight, she went to the front from Guilder. Hurry Girl, Lady Derby, and Irish Lass and Treasurer, anil was never in danger. Irish Lass looked likely to gain second money, but Treasurer got up on the line to beat her by half a head. Airline’s Surprise.

Prudent Prince was a pronounced favourite for the South Canterbury Handicap, but once again he was beaten into a minor placing. Gay Parade was the early leader and with half the journey covered, he was four lengths out in front from Stabilize, The ’Wrecker, Cherokee, Airline, Trench Fight, and Prudent Prince and King’s Toast, with Knight Commander, Wardress and Roy Bun bringing up the rear. Gay Parade still held his advantage entering the straight but inside the distance, Airline ran into the lead and a little farther on Prudent Prince challenged on the fence and King’s Toast moved up on the outside. In an interesting tussle, Airline stayed on to win well from Prudent: Prince, who held off King’s Toast by a narrow margin. Jewish Lad was missing from the Pareora Steeplechase and Astral Flame was sent out a good favourite but interest in him was soon lost as he crashed at the second fence after hitting the first heavily. Roseman soon opened up a big gap and he and Point Blank were disputing the lead two fences from home when Point Blank fell. Night Scout then moved up to Roseman and, gaining an advantage at the last fence, went on for an easy win, while Superex finished on to head off Golden Glow for third money. Secret Flight took charge from Master Hotspur a furlong from home in the Farewell Handicap and carried on for an attractive win from Sham Boy, who narrowly beat Boswell. Density was a close fourth just in front of Master Hotspur. Eulogist, win favourite for the Temuka Hack Handicap for apprentice riders, duly won, but he had a close call at the instance of Good Health. Both were slow to move off, but Eulogist had run into second place to Nightlass turning for home, with Good Health still well back. Eulogist. bad charge a furlong from the post

and appeared as if he had a decisive win in view, but bis rider was too easy on him, ami Good Health, finishing brilliantly, failed only by a head to overhaul him.
