FINE OF £25 IMPOSED
Negligent Driving, Causing
- Death
(By Telegraph —Press Association.) HAMILTON, Alay 14.
Having been found guilty yesterday on a charge of negligent driving causing the death of Myra Minnie Cooles at Hillcrest on March 13, William Reid Douglas, aged 27. motion picture projectionist. Morrinsville, appeared for sentence before Air. .lustiee Johnston in the Supreme Court in Ilamillou today. Prisoner’s good record must be taken into account, said his Honour. The result of the young man’s negligence was serious and, normally speaking, a term of imprisonment would be the proper penalty. However, effect must be given to the strong recommendation for mercy which was made by the jury. Still, the future must be taken into account and every precaution must be taken to prevent a repetition of the accident. Perhaps to a certain extent the accident was due to over-confidence by Douglas, who had done a good deal of driving. Douglas was lined £25 aud also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, the total to be paid in monthly instalments of £5. Ills driving licence was cancelled for two years, and he was ordered to take out a prohibition ordpr for 12 mouths.
