HOME GUARD ACTIVITIES

Melrose-Hought on Valley.—The Mel-rose-Houghton Valley sub-area of the Home Guard held a successful parade at Melrose on Monday night when new recruits were enrolled. N.C.O.’s, physical training and signal instructors have been officially appointed and a complete syllabus is being drawn up to cover all branches of training to be undertaken for several months. A number of lectures have been arranged to cover subjects having a bearing on Home Guard training relative' to active warfare. The Houghton Valley hall will be the scene of the next parade, which will take place on Monday at 7.30 p in. Newtown. — Methods of attack and defence in iield work are being studied by members of the Newtown unit of the Home Guard. Practical work was carried out on the southern boundary of the Newtown district on Saturday. Members of the signal section are attending three practices each week. Bombing practice will shortly be carried out under the command of Platoon Officer Dyer. A number of wooden bombs, correctly weighted and replicas of the Mills bomb, have been constructed and practice in handling and. throwing will be carried out shortly. Impressed rifles are coming in very well and a sufficient number is now in hand to ensure a good lire effect. Arrangements are also in hand facilitating class firing on the 25 yards targets and on the fail range. Lower Hutt—A recruiting parade of the Lower Hutt battalion of the Home Guard will be held at the Recreation Ground at 7 o’clock tonight. The battalion, headed by its band, will march through High Street, where a salute will be taken at the Post Office, followed by a recruiting rally at the entrance to Andrew’s Avenue.
