How To Overcome Club-root
In some gardens and allotments it is impossible to grow good crops of cauliflower and other members of the Brassica family owing to the dreaded club root or finger and toe; the soil retains the spores from year to year.
A good remedy is to trench the soil two, or even three spits deep, burying the surface soil which contains the spores and bringing up the fresh subsoil, which should be heavily dressed with lime before cropping is done. It. would not, however, be advisable to plant the same crop as before. Trenching is best done during autumn or early winter.
Tonic for Strawberries.— The young strawberry plants that cropped so heavily this year will need a tonic, while those that have fruited badly will also welcome one. Basic slag is the best thing to apply now. Put this down at the rate of 4oz. per square yard of laid, spreading it between the rows and among the plants and forking it lightly into the topsoil. Avoid disturbing the roots of the strawberries while doing this.
