EPIC OF GALLIPOLI

Anzac Day Message From Simla IMPERISHABLE BONDS The following Anzac Day message has been received by the Government from the chairman of the Eastern Group Supply Council, Simla: “At the instance of Australian and New Zealand members of the Eastern Group Supply Council, at a meeting held in Simla, appropriately observed the anniversary of the landing of* the Anzac Corps at Gallipoli, and my colleagues on the council desire me to forward to the Government and the people of New Zealand an expression ot their remembrance of the memorable feat of arms which characterized the epic landing on Gallipoli.” The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, has sent the following reply: “The Government and people of New Zealand warmly appreciate the recognition of Anzac Day by the Eastern Group Supply Council, and regard it as yet an additional instance of the imperishable bonds that unite the various portions of the British Commonwealth.” Messages have also been received by Army Headquarters from Field-Marshal Lord Birdwood and from General Sir Alexander Godley.

Lord Birdwood’s message is as follows: —“Kindest remembrances to all my old N.Z.E.F. comrades now in New Zealand. I well know that the thoughts of us in the Old Country are with our new comrades, who fight not only for democracy but to uphold the Christian religion, which under Hitlerism would ever be over fbrown for pure paganism. That none of us will ever tolerate or allow. Every kind wish. God bless New Zealand. Birdwood of Anzac.” General Godley’s message is as follows: —“I send my warmest greetings to the people of New Zealand, the New Zealand forces, and the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, and I am confident that the Second N.Z.E.F. now fighting a desperate battle is worthily upholding the traditions and glories of Anzac Day.”
