OBITUARY

Mr. E. A. Watkins

The death has occurred in Hastings of Mr. Edwin Alfred Watkins, states a “Dominion” Special Service message from Hastings. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. W. H. Watkins, M.L.0., Victoria, and was born in Melbourne in 1855. He came to New Zealand in 1877. After living in Dunedin for some time, he went to Napier in 1880, where he was employed for about 20 years as foreman saddler for the late Mr. John McVay. In 1896 he moved to Hastings, where he was in the saddlery business for years. He had resided in Hastings up to the time of his death.

In his younger days Mr. Watkins captained many teams in Hawke’s Bay cricket. His wife predeceased him 29 years ago.

There are left three sons—Harry, who left to serve in the Boer War in 1901 and has resided in South Africa since; Alfred (Hastings) and Roy (Petone), and four daughters, Mesdames E. Carter, Frank Powdrell, Walter White and Herbert Powdrell (all Hastings). « Mr. C. E. Chittey The death occurred recently in Wellington of Mr. Charles E. Chittey, formerly a well-known eivil servant. Mr. Chittey was born in Wellington in 1863, and lived in the capital practically all his life. After leaving school he joined the Civil Service as a cadet in the Treasury. There he rose to be cashier, a position he held for 28 years. He retired after 42 years’ service in 1920. Mr. Chittey was a life member of the Thorndon Bowling Club and Civil Service Club, and was honorary auditor for the Dorset Society. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. C. Backhouse, Karori, and Miss Alice Chittey, Wellington. Mrs. N. Walls The death occurred suddenly in Wanganui last Monday of Mrs. Nellie Walls, Foxton. She lost her husband three weeks ago and went to a sister, Mrs. K. Monk, in Wanganui, a few days ago for a holiday. On the Sunday both Mrs. Monk and Mrs. Walls became ill and were removed to hospital, where Mrs. Walls died the following morning. Born in Makotuku, Mrs. Walls spent most of her life in Foxton, where she married 19 years ago. She was •>! years of age and had no family. Relatives are Messrs. M. Jarman (Wellington), A. Jarman (Levin), and W. Jarman (New Plymouth), brothers, and Mesdames'W. Coley (Foxton), K. Monk (Wanganui), Olsen (Takapau), Lowe (Ouga) and Monk (Tauranga), sisters.

Mrs. Mary Anh Cullen

Mrs. Mary Ann Cullen, of 24 Konini Street, Hataitai, died last week in a Wellington private hospital. She was the widow of the late Sergeant Francis Cullen, of the New Zealand Police Force (a brother of the late Mr. John Cullen, Commissioner of Police). Mrs. Cullen left four sons, three of whom are much respected members of the Roman Catholic clergy. They are Monsignor P. F. Cullen. Palmerston North, Father Alfred Cullen, Brisbane, and Father Joseph Cullen, of the Catholic College of Lismore, New South Wales (formerly of Nelson). The fourth son is Mr. Thomas Cullen, of the staff of the Department of Agriculture.
