The result of an investigation by the Wallaceville Laboratory Into the death of six grey duck near Swann’s road bridge, Avonside, was reported to the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatization Society. Traces of phosphorus were found in the stomachs of the ducks indicating that they had died of phosphorus poisoning. “It is considered highly probable that the birds have had access to poisoned baits laid for rabbits or rats,, the baits having been dislodged by flood waters and quite accidentally conveyed to the river at the point referred to,” reported the rangers’ committee. The committee expressed anxiety that residents should take all possible care, when poisonbaiting for vermin, to set the baits securely, so that no harm could come to the ducks.
