PRICE OF EGGS

Retailers Reply To Statement A statement by the Hutt Valley branch of the New Zealand PoultryProducers’ Federation that "retailers may charge what they may for eggs,” was denied yesterday by the secretary of the Wellington Master Grocers’ Association, Mr. J. A. Kellow. “Article 26 of the egg marketing regulations, 1940. gives the Minister power to stop the supplies of any retailer who is selling eggs at a price prejudicial to the orderly marketing of eggs,” he said. “Actually retail grocers are selling eggs at a profit insufficient to cover overhead expenses. In most shops eggs are retailed at roughly 10 per cent, profit. Under present conditions, at least. 15 per cent, should ,be made to cover overhead charges and to allow for paper bags, breakages and bad eggs.”
