SIR BEAU FAILS IN STAKES

Easy For Gold Dale NOTIUM SCORES AT LONG ODDS Final Day At Taranaki Dominion Special Service. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 8. The Taranaki Jockey Club was favoured with better weather for the concluding day of its Centennial Cup meeting. The weather today was bright and at times oppressively hot. The track was in perfect condition and there was a large attendance. The Taranaki Stakes resulted, in a win.for a district horse in Gold Dale, who led all the way and won troni the two-year-olds Panoni and Kaimanawa. Sir Beau, the favourite, raced ungenerously and was never in a winning position.

An outsider in Notiuni won the Paul Memorial in race record time, leading all the way and returning win odds above half a century. The sprint was won by Zest, who had run last on the first day, and she was loudly hooted by a section of the crowd when she returned to the birdcage. When the stipendiary steward, Mr. Gomer, questioned the owner, Mr. SV. S. Glenn, the latter asked for an inquiry into the apparent reversal of form. The explanation of the horse’s connexions was accepted, evidence being produced to show that the mare was genuinely backed in the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, ou the first day, when ridden by Atkins. Today she was ridden by the stable apprentice, Sargent, so that an allowance could be claimed, and she surprised many people by the improved showing she made over an extra furlong. The totalizator today handled £25,410 10/-, compared with £21,982 last year, an increase of £3419/10/-. The total for the meeting was £43,910, compared with £37,548 last year, 'an increase of £6362. Hurdles to Kollicker. Though he jumped badly, Rollicker had sufficient pace to win the Okoke Hurdles, lie followed Great Night, for six furlongs, where she crashed, leaving Rollicker in charge, and he drew out to lead by about six lengths from General Riske, Karere-Nui, Resingold and Kaiwaka, who were strung out. Resingold, Kaiwaka and General Riske closed on Rollicker approaching the last fence, but he led over it by a length and ran on to win handily by a length without being ridden out. Resingold and Kaiwaka both finished solidly, Resingold getting second money by a nose. General Riske was fourth, with Karere-Nui, Southern Blood and Disturbed next. Close Finish In Maiden Race. The Awakino Hack Handicap lor maidens produced a close finish in which Minvaal hung on to win by a nose from En Volee, with a head to Malo. Minvaal jumped out first and led to the turn with Windsor Glow and Malo practically on terms, and Valtour and En Volee next. Minvaal and Malo were clear at the last furlong, where En Volee tried to force her way between them, and had she got through sooner she probably would have won. However, Minvaal battled on and lasted just long enough to win. Valtour was a fair fourth after covering much extra ground on the home turn, nnd she was followed in by Ra Rena, Silver Gold and Sunfire. Windsor Glow broke a fetlock while running with the leaders and was pulled up. He was subsequently destroyed. Well Deserved Win.

Martene, who had been placed eight tinifcs since dead-heating for a maiden race at Feilding in December, scored a well-deserved win in the Mokau Handicap.

He was kept’in a handy position about fifth till nearing the straight and then ran up into third place behind the leaders, Miss Clipper and Sanction, while Wavelength and Mansura, improved their positions at the same time. Sanction hit the front at the straight entrance, but she quickly compounded and Martene dashed through to take charge and run on to be a comfortable ivin by a length and a half. Mansura and Wavelength came on for the minor places with half a length between them, and Filbert was fourth after being badly placed at the 'home turn. Miss Clipper and Sanction wore next to arrive. Vhl I’ere ran ungenerously. Sir Beau Disappoints.

Sir Beau failed in the Taranaki Stakes. He did not run up to expectations, but his task was made a hard one for a three-ycar-old under a 101 b. penalty, by the terrific pace set by Gold Dale. Kaimanawa and Panoni raced neck and neck with Gold Dale till the half mile where Kaimanawa appeared to slip and went back a little. Gold Dale maintained his speed throughout and Panoni hung on to him till the last half furlong where she submitted and Gold Dale beat her home by two lengths. Kaimanawa was a similar- distance back third and Sir Beau a further two lengths back fourth.

Sir Beau was giving the leaders at least six lengths start three furlongs from home. lie reduced the gap to two lengths at the distance, but was then spent and Morris did not punish him when he realized that the chase was hopeless. Gold Dale ran the distance in 1.12 4-5, which is 3.5 sec. outside Mother Superior’s race record established in 1935. Notitim Surprises. Notium, scoring his first success since he won the Ashhurst Cup 14 months ago, returned his few supporters with odds beyond half a century when he led all the way to win the Paul Memorial Handicap. Going along the back stretch he was out four or five lengths from Ascot Bloom, with Dark Eagle, Friesland and Gay Fox most prominent of the others. Dark Eagle, Ascot Bloom and Gay Fox drew up to Notium as they turned into the straight, but Notium battled on and in a hard finish he hept his head in front of Gay Fox who just touched off Ascot Bloom in the last, stride. Friesland was fourth ahead of Piastre, Hunting Bee and Dark Eagle. Notium deserved his win for he made all the nace anti hung on to score in fast time. Being forced over a little extra ground getting into a challenging position on the turn cost Gay Fox the race. Ascot Bloom, getting a bettor run than in the Taranaki Cup. looked a likely winner when he drove tip along the fence nt the distance, 'but he weakened again tn the last few strides. Cheval de A nice was going smothly three furlongs from home; but ho failed to run on. Miss Phaleron Improves.

Miss Phaleron, a half-sister by Phttleron .Bay to Miss Hallomet, won the two-year-old handicap sticking on gamely to iight off challenges from Optmlia and, Imperium and win by a long neck. Miss Phaleron set a strong pace to the straight, with Park Light. Erinscourt, Opuatia, High 'rone and Imperium following. Imperium was kicked up nearer the leaders turning for home and lie drew almost on terms witii Miss Phaleron and Opuatia inside the last furlong. However,

Miss I’haleron had something more in reserve and she was doing better than her two opponents al the finish, beating Opuatia narrowly with Imperium . 11 neck away third and Vermette finishing on from behind fourth. Next to arrne were Come True, Prince Plato and High Tone. Erinscourt was well placed at the home turn, but then stopped. Unpopular Winner. Zest, who had finished last when favourite in the Flying Handicap on Cup day. won the Ilrenui Handicap almost from end to end. She jumped out with Screen Star, headed him before reaching the six, and was thereafter always two lengths in front till nearing the post where Kentucky and Veldette tried to pull her back, but she held on to win by a short length from Kentucky who recorded his third second placing on end. Veldette was a length and a half away third - and Dinky Di. who ran on better than on the first day, was fourth. Zest was loudly hooted when she returned to scale for her reversal of form. Kentucky appeared unable to go the early pace and had some ground to make up from the half mile. His turn should not bo long delayed. Screen Star did not run up to tiret day form. Lord Cavendish, well back five furlongs from home, raced up into third place before reaching the straight, out was soon finished with. Easy for Surveyor-General. Surveyor-General, favourite at good odds, scored a comfortable win in the Omatii Handicap. Ringling and Barry Boy set the buck to the distance where Surveyor-General took charge, and he won almost unchallenged, Mountain Fox coming from the ruck to make a fruitless claim and fail bv a length and a half to get the winner. Boden Park, who was third, was last at the half mile and finished well. Ringling tired into fourth and was followed in by Le Marquis. Nothing had a chance with the winner over the last furlong.
