OBITUARY
Miss Edith Hodgkinson / DUNEDIN, March 7. The death has occurred at the ago of 81 of Aliss Edith Hodgkinson, a daughter of Dr. Samuel Hodgkinson, who was a member of Parliament for the Riverton and Wallace constituencies, states a Special Service message from Dunedin. Miss Hodgkinson was the author of two collections of verse, “A Handful of New Zealand A’erse’ and “God Is Our Refuge And Strength.” She took a degree at the University of Otago and was later engaged in teaching iu the North Island. lor some time she was a prolific contributor of articles to the “Otago AA itness.” She was recognized as one ot the “old school” of poets and had a keen appreciation of literature, particularly of John ‘ Milton, whose works she could recite at length. Even in her later years, she had a remarkable memory and was noted for her incisive comments on current events. A brother and two nieces of Aliss Hodgkinson live in Auckland.
Mr. David McMurran
Mr. David McMurran, who was lost overboard from an intercolonial steamer recently, was born at Kilmarnock. Ayrshire, Scotland, on January I<, 1879. His lifetime was spent as a marine engineer, among: the companies with whom he served being the British India S.N. Co., McLay, Mclntyre and Co., James Currie and Co., the Canterbury Steamship Co., and Blackball Coal Company. The latter company’s vessels were taken over by the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., in April, 1922, and Mt. McMurran came with them as second engineer of the s.s. Ngahere. Other vessels in which Mr. McMurran subsequently served were Kahika, Kaikoral. Ngakuta, Kakapo. Kaiapoi, Opihi. Waipiata, Kaituna, Poolta. Totara, Kini and Gabriella. He is survived by his wife and one sou, William McMurran.
