PRISON ESCAPEES
Hard Labour Sentences
(Bv Telegraph—Press Association.l CHRISTCHURCH, February 18.
“I cannot order a flogging in this case, as the authorities for some reason which I do not understand have merely charged you with common assault. Had the charge been presented otherwise I would have ordered a flogging, as it is the duty of the Court to protect prison officials. If you offend again that is what, you can expect,” said his Honour Mr. Justice Norlhcroft in the Supreme Court today in sentencing Evans George 55'illiam Chase, Manuel Poihipi and Jeffery Evans Francis Turner each to a year's hard labour for assault. Chase, Poihipi and Turner, together with Stanley Raymond O’Connor and Claude Byron Hill, were also sentenced to three years’ hard labour, the sentences to be cumulative with the sentences they are already serving.
All live appeared for escaping from custody and the first-mentioned three for assault. Ilis Honour said that Chase and Poihipi within the last few months were sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for causing actual bodily harm so as to facilitate escape. “Immediately afterward, with the former incident in mind, you most brutally assaulted a warder and injured him so severely to facilitate your escape that hc Is still unfit for duty,” said his Honour.
