MILITARY SERVICE
Conscientious Appeals Heard Yesterday
Fourteen appeals against military service, all on the grounds of conscientious objection, were beard by the No. 4 Armed '‘'orce.s Appeal Board in Wellington yesterday. Five were allowed with the recoinniendation that tlie appellants be called upon to perform alternative non-military service, seven were dismissed anil two were adjourned sine die. In all cases apIH'llants urged religious teaching as the basis of their appeals. The board comprised Messrs. SV. F. Stilwell. S.M.. chairman; P. Coyle anil J. Colman. The Crown representative is Mr. C. O. Bell and Mr. D. Roundhiss is secretary.
The appeals of the following appellants were allowed, with the recommendation that they l'e called upon to perform alternative service of tl ttotimilitar.v nature at the discretion of the Minister of National Service: —■» Alan IVilliatn Cooper, school teacher Leslie John Mills, missionary; Edward 55'illiam Cole, clerk : Robert Sydney Cretney, postal messenger: amt Gordon Howard Cole, clerk. The appeals of the following were dismissed after the board had heard evidence: —Charles Francis Cooper, watersider; Colin Dodswortli Clark, electrical engineering cadet: Charles Stanley Co<>i>er. publisher's assistant : Cour de la Cour, radio apprentice: Alexander Janies Inn Elton, electrical (ester; Haddon Charles Dixoci. minister of religion: and John Michael Davis, cannister maker.
The appeals of two Salvation Army officers, Bertrand Michael IVilliatn s’erran and Arnold Kenneth Dalefield, were adjourned sine die. Some of the appeals were in respect of overseas service and others in respect of territorial service.
