TOWN PLANNING IN CHRISTCHURCH
Reply To Critics Of Scheme
Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, February IS.
“If there are mistakes in our scheme, now is the time to rectify them. It is the basis for negotiation and for the improvement of the city,” said Or. J. E. Jones, chairman of the town-planning committee, at the meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening when replying to criticism of the town-planning scheme. He insisted that though the scheme had a long history there had been no unreasonable delays and that the responsibility for there being no comprehensive regional scheme rested with the outlying local bodies.
The period for objections ended on February 14, said Cr. Jones, and a fair number had been received from architects and from surrounding local bodies. The council had been charged by some of the outside local bodies with not including their areas in the scheme. All the local bodies had been invited to take part in a regional scheme, but when it was decided to have the area surveyed some of these bodies declared the cost prohibitive.
