MASTERTON SHOW
Entries Slightly Down, Quality High
SOLWAY AT ITS BEST
Dominion Special Service
MASTERTON, February 18.
Glorious weather favoured the Masterton A. and J'. Assoeiatiop for the first day
of its fifty-fourth annual show on the Solway Showgrounds today. The day was hot and cloudless, with a light westerly breeze, and the recent rain had freshened the lawns to a brilliant green.
Though unlicensed showmen were excluded, there was an excellent array of the bettor class of sideshows. The sideshow proprietors wore unanimous in their
approval of the licensing system, and it was freely staled that “this was a place where they could sleep without worrying."
Entries were down slightly on last year in some of the sections, particularly sheep and cattle. This was not caused by any lack of quality exhibits iu the district, suggested the president. Mr. R. E. G. Lee, lint rather by labour troul.de. The quality of the exhibit was well up to the standard of pervious ygars. added Mr. Lee. The champions were animals of highest breeding and quality, and would not bo disgraced at any show iu New Zealand. Mr. Lee said the appearance of the grounds and buildings was the best for many years, and iiis comment was certainly justified. Recently painting and renovating work has been incorporated in the general maintenance schedule, and the fresh, clean appearance of stand and buildings, the well-kept sward and the gay booths and stands blended into a pleasing picture. The usual first-day attendance of farmers and exhibitors was augmented to a rather greater degree than usual during tlie afternoon by a crowd of townspeople who were tempted out by the glorious weather.
