APPEAL DISMISSED
Salvationist Appears In Uniform Appearing in a Salvation Army bandsman’s uniform, Herbert Roy Dutton, aged 23, insurance agent, appealed on the ground of conscientious objection before the No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington yesterday. He said he had been a local officer aud bandsman for six years and engaged in young people’s and bands’ work. He was prepared to devote his whole time to the Salvation Army for the duration of the war. Mr. C. O. Bell, Crown representative: Are you prepared to do any war service? —I have been accepted by the Salvation Army for work in the 'Waiouru camp institute and am proceeding there at once if this appeal is allowed. You would do ambulance work?— Under the auspices of the Salvation Army. The chairman: You are well aware that there are no. military units under Salvation Army control. Mr. Bell: What do you feel is your responsibility to New Zealand at present?—ln any- capacity under Salvation Army auspices. Would you enter the army if you were assured of non-combatant work? —lt would not be definite. If I went in I would have to do any service required. Would you take the word of the Government?—lf a proposal was put to me, I would have to consider it. If the Government assured you of non-combatant service under military control, would you accept it? —Yes, I would. To Mr. Bell appellant said he was at present engaged in fulltime insurance work. Colonel Burton, of the Salvation Army, said he had been aware of appellant’s convictions for two years. Staff was needed for the institution at Waiouru and appellant would be useful there. The appeal was dismissed.
