Citizens Rallying To The Civil Guard TRAINING OF UNITS BY FIRE BRIGADE Officials of various Wellington subareas of the Civil Guard have reported during the past week that enrolments are increasing. It is believed that this is the result in large measure of the interest roused in the Wellington Fire Brigade's course of instruction for firefighting units, which began on Monday. The first lecture and demonstration are being given to selected units in rotation. Titus the instruction given ou Monday night was repeated last night and will continue tonight at 7.30 o’clock and tomorrow night. The remaining parades of the series are to be held on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. Tomorrow night at the Central Fire Station fire-fighting trainees from the Kelburn and Hataitai sub-areas will parade, iu addition to units from the central sub-areas (also Roseneath, which has been incorporated with the city group). Iu view of the large muster which is expected and the importance of building up strong units iu the central sub-areas, the officers of the Central Fire Station have arranged a special demonstration of emergency apparatus and methods. In the case of' the central sub-areas, ft is hoped that after members of the tire-fighting unit have been through the full course of instruction they will take part in the formation and training of special staff units in large build ings. Under the scheme which the committee representing the centra) areas lias in mind each large establishment will be requested to form its own emergency corps and be responsible, under the general direction of the sub-area chief warden, for its own emergency service. KELBURN SUB-AREA PARADE A full meeting of Civil Guardsmen attached to the Kelburn sub-area has been called for this evening at 7.30 o’clock in the Teachers’ Training College. A large muster is being sought and all intending members are being urged to attend, because part of the business will be the formation of all required sub-area units. In addition a report on last week’s wardens’ conference will be given to members, together with a detailed explanation of the sub-area emergency scheme which is being planned. PLIMMERTON SUB-AREA About 70 persons attended a public meeting on Thursday in St. Andrew’s Hall, I’limmerton. Mr. R. L. Button, chief warden, informed the meeting of what had been achieved by the governing committee, mentioning the formation of the military section under Lieutenant A. A. Hancock; fire section, under Mr. G. H. AlcDermid ; transport, Mr. Albert Hollingdrake; ambulance, Mr. F. L. Ross; traffic police, Mr, F. C. Denman (to be confirmed). All these nominees are veterans of the last war. Mr. O. Al. Lane will control communications. Lieutenant-Colonel A. Cowles was introduced to the meeting by the chairman. He gave a detailed explanation of the services required from volunteers for the protection of the State. All present were enthusiastic in their expressed desire to do their duty. At the close of the meeting 20 more enlistments were recorded, bringing the total strength to 55. Many more enlistments are required to make up this district’s quota.
