EXPORT OF PORK

Statement On Shipping Problem ADVICE TO PRODUCERS A statement on the recent Government proiioiiiieeiiienl regarding (he shipping outlook has been made by Mr. IV. A. Phillips, chairman of directors of the New Zen la ml Co-operative Pig Marketing Association. He said that to deny that the position was serious would lie foolish, bill, as in most situations, circumstances would not lie im-

proved by exaggeration. It had been stated by responsible sources that if a normal course was followed by producers in the sale of their live stock, the existing storage plus the additional emergency accommodation which was being provided would amply provide for this season’s requirements. This assurance should be accepted, and producers would ensure I lie best; possible result by following the course indicated in the disposal of their fat stock. When questioned on the effect of the Government's request that, in future all baconers should be shipped in Wiltshire Sides, Mr. Phillips said that though the commandeer price tit f.o.b. for Wiltshire Sides is SJd. against 7RI. for carcases, because of the extra works charges and the weight shrinkage involved in the removal of the head, backbone, and trotters, the net return to exporters would be substantially reduced. Against this, however, freezing companies’ space for pigs would be increased by approximately one-third, and shipping companies will enjoy a similar advantage which would be reflected in lower freight costs to the British Ministry of Food. “Wo are living in difficult times,” concluded Mr. Phillips, “and the present is no time to quibble about these matters so long as in the ultimate insult we are doing our utmost to help the 'Mother Country.”
