EMERGENCY SCHEME Masterton Preparations Dominion Special Service. ' MASTERTON. January 31. At. a meeting of the Emergency Precautions Scheme committee in Masterton last night a letter was received from the Wellington town clerk regarding arrangements made at a meeting held in ■Wellington earlier in the week for the evacuation of city residents in the event of an emergency. It was decided, said the letter, that all local bodies be asked to make a survey of the accommodation available at the end 'of February. The minutes of the meeting, which were read by Mr. G. T. OHara Smith, contained no reference to the cost of making the survey. Mr. T. Jordan, who was present, at the meeting, said he had raised the question of the cost involved in making the survey, and the meeting had decided that this should be borne by the whole of the local bodies engaged, including Wellington city. It was decided to point out the omission from the minutes. The controller of the medical and public health committee, Mr .Lee. said first-aid cabinets had been installed at the. Masterton Chib and Lansdowne School. The hospital board had obtained 100 folding beds for emergency purposes. Stretchers were not being provided, as the Government held that it was not the duty of the board to provide them. The men’s division of the St. John Ambulance Corps had offered to give every assistance if required, but additional men for stretcher-bearer duties were needed. Mr. Lee suggested that meh not already detailed for special duties could be formed into a squad for that purpose. It was decided that the authorities, he asked to reconsider their ruling regarding the provision of first-aid equipment in the dressing-stations. The St. John Ambulance Corps is to be communicated with to ascertain the position regarding stretcher-bearers.
