GERMAN SUBMARINES

Many Sunk By British LONDON, December 13. Though the sinkings of German submarines for obvious reasons are not announced as they occur, there is little doubt that they have suffered recently at the hands of both the R.A.F. and the X Well-informed circles in London today sav that, the R.A.F. in their constant attacks on Lorient and .other French ports which the Germans are now using as U-boat bases have undoubtedly damaged and probably sunk some of the Nazi submarines in these harbours. The ceaseless watch of the British Fleet and the constant activities of submarine-harrying aircraft are also stated to have met with successes recently. The public may not hear about them, but the Admiralty has very good reasons for reticence. Often, for instance, the Germans themselves do not know when they lose a submarine, and if they are informed by British communiques they would at once take steps to replace those lost.
