Items Of Interest From The Provinces FISHING AT TAUPO Encouraging Reports From Observers Dominion Special Service. Reports from observers at various points at Taupo indicate that fish are more numerous this year. Encouraging reports have been, received from Hatepe, Waipehi, Tauranga-Taupo and Waitahanui, but the same position also applies to other favoured areas, including the Waikato River right from the Ripple (at the wharf), down to Fulljames Reach. The stretch near Reid’s farm appears promising. On the western side ot the lake Whakaipo, Waihaha, Waikoro and the other numerous streams and bays in the western bay should provide good fishing. The Waitahanui mouth is practically back to its original position and is now in the best fishing condition for years. This stream is carrying a large number of good-conditioned fish.
Lighting Of Hastings Station. Representations to have Hastings Railway Station more adequately lighted, which were made iby the Hastings Retailers’ Association and the Hastings Borough Council, have been successful. The council has received advice from the stationmaster, Mr. J. Finlay, that a timeswitch is to be installed to enable the station to b.e adequately lighted in the evenings and specially on Sunday nights when the railcar arrives from Wellington.
\on-uiiion Shearers. At a meeting of the Levin branch ot Lhe Farmers’ Union it was resolved to make a request to the Minister of Labour, through the Manawatu provincial executive. that for the period of the war no restrictions be placed on the employment of non-union shearers, and that no penalty be imposed on employer or employee for carrying out work in this category. Housing in Waipawa County. Application to the Government Loans Board for £3OOO under the Rural Housing Act, 1939, is to be made as a result of a decision at a special meeting of the Waipawa County Council. One application has been received so far by the council, but it is expected that there will be more.
Killed By Cricket Ball. , An inquest into the death of Jack Henry McNamara was held in Featherston before the district coroner, Mr. T. E. Long. Tlie verdict returned was that death was caused by cerebral haemorrhage following a blow on the head witn a cricket ball.
Napier Harbour Board Vacancy. The name of the chairman, Mr. N. M. Paulsen, is being forwarded to tlie Government by tlie Waipawa County Council with :i reeonunendation for his appointment to fill Um vacancy on the Napier Harbour Board caused by the death of .Mr. .lull, M.l’.
Hastings Seed-cropping Scheme. Further progress will be made this week with lhe Hustings .Municipal Seedcropping Committees plans, when !•» acres of beans will be sown on about a’ dozen small sections which have been offered by owners for Ibis purpose. The varieties to be sown will be mainly ol the dwarf type, but lliere will lie some ol tlie canning variety. Seeds ami seedlings for transplanting next season will alse be sown on four acres of Nelson Park extension, tlie preliminary digging ami levelling work having been com pie led.
Human Remains Found. A human skull and some bones were found iu Ibe old borough rubbish lip just inside lhe fence on the northern boundary of the Foxloii Racing Club’s properly recently. Tlie matter was reported to tlie police, who made an investigation. It is apparent that the remains are those of nu aged Maori. They are very old and from indications the bones wore dumped on lhe reserve in a bug which Ims since rolled away.
Impressed By Hawke’s Buy Show. What be hud seen at lhe Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s spring show had favourably impressed him, said Professor .1. T. Wilson, who occupies the chair of sheep and wool at tlie University of California. Professor Wilson is visiting the Dominion to study sheepfarming methods and to take special note of the quality of New Zealand wool. Empire. Airways Officer. First Officer M. W. Bateman, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Bateman, Hastings, who has been instructing Air Force trainees at Mascot Aerodrome, Sydney, lias rejoined the staff of Qantas Empire Airways, Sydney. He will be second to Command of I he. flying-boats on the Empire airmail service between Sydney and Singapore.
