News And Notes From Town And Country

Music at Open Afternoon. Members of the Pioneer Club, Wellington, and their friends, met in the club yesterday afternoon for the monthly “open” .afternoon, when a programme of excellent music was enjoyed. The main lounge, with its tasteful gold and wine furnishings, was decorated with blue flowers, dutch irises predominating. Mrs. AValter Duncan arranged the programme, which was as follows: Songs, Miss Ina Rapley and Mrs. Walter Duncan; elocutionary items, Miss Nannestead; pianoforte solos, Miss Lois Ramsay. Mrs. Duncan and Miss Rapley also gave vocal duets. Mrs. C. E. Adams, a vice-president of the club, thanked the performers.

Feilding B.M.S. Concert. Music lovers in Feilding attended the final concert of the season arranged by the local branch of the British Music Society this week. Au excellent programme included vocal, pianoforte and ’cello numbers presented by guest artists from 'Wellington. Madame Greta Ostova. Misses Dorothy Davies, Jocelyn Walker and Mr. Owen ’Bonlfant. Madame Ostova’s ’cello numbers included “Melody,” by Gluck, and “Songs My Mother Taught Me,” by Dvorak. Pianoforte items by Miss Walker included Paderewski’s “Theme Varie,” and Chopin’s “Scherzo in C Sharp Minor.” Mr. Bonifant gave songs; among these were “Songs of Travel” and “The Vagabond.” Miss Davies acted as accompanist throughout the programme, with Miss Walker. The artists were entertained later at School House by Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Wild.

Lower Hutt War Committee. The district committee selected for the Hutt Valley branch of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary comprises Mrs. M. Blewman, Mrs. Hyslop, Mrs. J. Farrell, Mrs. Powell, Mrs. M. Miller, Mrs. W. Evans, Mrs. J. D. King, Mrs. R. Bennett, and Mrs. W. BensteaiL The meeting was presided over by the mayoress of Lower Hutt,- Mrs. J. IV. A nd rows.

War Service Activities. Attention is drawn to an advertisement in this issue in which a programme is given of next week's physical culture classes in connexion with the Women’s War Service Auxiliary in Wellington. The classes will all be given in the Masonic Hall, The Terrace, and concern all groups and corps.
