It is officially stated that bombs were dropped at a number of points iu south-east and south-west England, the Midlands, and South Wales last night. Some property was damaged in the Midlands and South Wales. Elsewhere there was very little damage. Casualties were very few and none was fatal.
Single German bombers were over nearly 100 towns and villages during the day. They dropped many bombs, machine-gunned a street at the seaside, and a police station, and bombed a racecourse. The damage and casualties were small. . The raids continued after nightfall and were concentrated on the southeast coast, where 20 bombs were dropped in a residential area. A heavy anti-aircraft barrage drove off the planes. The casualties were light because the residents went into the shelters. Il is believed that a uew typo ot “silent” bomb was dropped near a south-east town on August 22. A large crater was formed a few yards from cottages, the occupants of which had not heard explosions. It is now revealed that one of the German bombers destroyed on Thursday evening was shot down by a Belgian tighter pilot. It was the fifth enemy aircraft he had destroyed since lie joined a Fighter Command squadron a month ago after escaping with his wife and baby from Belgium.
