BIG TEAMS ACTIVE AT HASTINGS
Interest In Juveniles
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, August 24.
Local trainers are now beginning to tune up their charges for early spring racing. However, continued rain in the latter part of July and the first two weeks of August has caused juveniles to be decidedly backward in comparison with past seasons. lienee, not one is entered for Wanganui, a meeting which will see a team of 30 from here participating.
This morning most of the gallops were more in preparation for more serious work next week than test trials. However, approximately 100 horses were exercised and furnished interesting work.
Lambourn and dragon ran five comfortably in 67 with the latter, a pleasing mare, appealing strongly as the right type for the Oaks race, for which Gold Rod’s half-sister is to be specially prepared. Limbohm, looking all the better for his National campaign, was given strong work. No definite programme has yet been arranged but later he will in all possibility be eased in training and next season is to be put to steeplechasing. Collodion came home freely over the last seven furlongs of two rounds. This gelding is to be raced on the flat because of his disinclination for hurdling. Roeon, the half-century dividend payer of last June, was restricted to an even-time working gallop. He is one of the small team leaving here next week for Taranaki.
Yogi, who has re-entered remarkably well, in the company of the improving Dunmanway, pleased in a 66see. five-fur-long effort, and Kathbella, now developed into a bonnie mare, sprinted three against the bit in 41. El Minola and a Hunting Song—Tea Doll gelding went well in a 51sec. halfmile sprint. This pair are the most promising of the novices' class in which Hastings is particularly rich at present. Three juveniles, Syana (Bulandshar — Hathor), Stolen Coat (Pink Coat—Stolenpiece) and the Bulandshar —Alimony filly were not extended and recorded 40 for three furlongs. Livelv Lady and Tyigane took 52j for half a mile, Battle Gain and Indiscreet doing five in 67}. Master Cyklon, carrying lOst, who appears on the eve of striking winning form, came home solidly, the last three in 40. Hugme’s time of 51sec. was not bettered during the morning over four furlongs. She has improved on her Trent-liam-Riccarton trip when she was not raced. Gold Court and Dyne, two promising maidens, were under restraint in registering 67 over five furlongs The big Bulandshar —Thornproof three-year-old in J. M. Cameron’s stable, and who is being predicted to make the firstclass handicap grade, was pulling double when finishing a 39sec. run over three furlongs, with Loch Moigh. Smoke Trail ami Red Shoes. Sternchase is in. great order to commence serious training. Soho has been tried over country. Though as yet his jumping is high lie gives every indication of developing into a brilliant fencer. The typo of two-year-olds here this season is much better than for quite a few years with two Tiieios at present the most outstanding, one being from Painted Screen, who will race as Theatre, and the other from that honest, game marc of a few years back, Lavina. S. Reid with a narrow and lightly constructed filly by Solicitor-General —Lucinda, certainly 'has one that looks an early speed merchant.
