RICCARTON GALLOPS

A. E. Ellis To Ride Beau Vite In Australia Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, August 21. Riccai’ton was visited by a hard frost this morning but the sun shone brightly during the training period. The No. (1 grass track was heavier than on Thursday as a result of a downpour of rain on' Friday. Some jumpers enlivened the proceedings and a lew Hat racers were given strong work. El Caballo acted as mate for Merry Simon in a run over six hurdles, both horses' jumping well. Merry Simon has made rapid progress as a hurdler and may have his first race at the Otago Hunt Chib’s meeting next Saturday. Donadea, a novice at the jumping game, gave a good display over three hurdles, and may come to hand quickly. The three-year-old, Muffler, who was much improved by racing (his month, was given a mile gallop with his owner, Mr. G. Murray Aynsley, as a spectator. Sovereign Lady accompanied him but she was beaten decisively over the last half furlong. The time was not fast but Muffler pleased in the way he finished. Shikari and Wild Fox did best over five furlongs, Wild Fox running on strongly to be a neck in front at the post. This pair of three-year-olds are making good progress with their preparation for early engagements. Royal Chief could have improved on his time for live furlongs. He is rapidly getting into racing shape, and F. D. Jones will probably give him his first run of the season at Ashburton. After that he will go to Trenthain and this programme should bring him to his best for the New Zealand Cup. for which he is a probable candidate.

Iceland Spar looks very well after two races at the Grand National meeting. She has given definite evidence of stamina and with average luck will produce some improved form during the spring. King's Toast hit out freely in a three-furlong sprint. He has come on well sinee he resumed work following a spell. Blue Abbey went well in a run over three furlongs. His third in the Cashmere Plate was an attractive effort and he .has prospects of staying. A. E. Ellis left tonight on his way to Australia. He has been engaged to ride Beau Vite in his spring engagements, and as these include the Melbourne Cup Ellis may be absent for about three months.
