WINSOME LU IMPRESSES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAWERA, August 21. After overnight rain the course proper was fairly heavy for fast work at llawera this morning, when the semifinal gallops for New Plymouth took place. Winsome Lu, Nothin! and Martene were among those to please. Vivacious (Turn) was not bustled to traverse half a mile in 58J. GiLatia Lass (Edgecombe) covered the same distance in 58. Golden Ring (Sexton) finished clear of Red Myosotis (Cole) at the end of three furlongs in 41. The latter is unlikely to be persevered with much longer. Teasoff (Graham) sprinted a couple of furlongs in 26 4-5. She has improved considerably in appearance lately. High Tone (McDonald) shaded Battleiress (Holland) in a similar effort to record 27j. Winsome Lu (Reilly) finished better than Student Prince (Sexton) to beat him by a lenglh over six furlongs, the last five in 1.91. Winsome Lu revelled in the going and the Raceful marc promises to make her presence felt in pending engagements. Notium (Holland) ran five furlongs in 1.6 4;5. He had nothing in reserve at the end. Martene (Ryan), Barry Bov (McDonald) and Stencil (Holland) finished in that order over half a. mile in 53 4-5. Steneil lost ground at the start and little notice need be taken of her effort. Royal Star II (Cole) worked over a round in his usual bold manner and recorded 431 to a three-furlong .sprint. Silver Gift (Reilly) traversed half a mile in 541. From a barrier start Surveyor General (Grindlny), ran three furlongs in 41.
