PAKURANGA HUNT MEETING

Biform’s Surprise Win Tn Cup JELLICOE HANDICAP TO TE KAWITI Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, August 24. The Pakuranga Hunt races were held at .Ellerslie today in fine weather. The attendance was good, and the track heavy. The totalizator handled £50,321, compared with £40,405/10/-. last year, an increase of £3915/10/-. Beverley Wins Well. Having his first race over country, Beverley scored nicely in the Greenmount Hunters' Steeplechase, . for which Etcetera was the favourite. Cockalarum fell, and the contest was robbed of. much interest when Etcetera and Leighton Buzzard fell at the third fence, the first on the hill. Silver Wattle was then left in front, from Beverley, Searcher and British Lass. Turning along the back British Lass went to the lead, and on the hill the second time she drew clear to come over the stonewall into the straight eight lengths ahead of Beverley, with the others beaten. Once into the straight British Lass began to tire, and Beverley came through on the inside to beat her by five lengths. Searcher was 15 lengths away third, with Big Bill a poor fourth. Silver Wattle and Domination fell at the second fence on the hill in the second round, both being well beaten. Favourite Beaten. The each-way favourite, Little Ruse, was beaten into fourth in the Harris Memorial Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles, in which Tutor, Red Appellant, and Beeswing fell. The Trimmer was quickly in the lead, and made the early running from Midland, Little Ruse, Vaalso, Vaispear, and Bright Idea. After five furlongs, Midland was in command, and, with half a mile to go, he was clear of The Trimmer, Little Ruse, Vaalso, and

’ Bright Idea, who was moving up. Midland came into the straight two lengths clear of Bright Idea and The Trimmer, with Little Ruse heading the others. Bright Idea outstayed Midland in the run I home, and beat him by a length. The Trimmer was seven lengths away third, and Little Ruso was fourth, succeeded by Vaalso, Valspear, and Tane Mahotu. The first and second beat the others easily. Bright Idea stayed on well after being nicely handled by W. Pascoe, who was having his first mount for some time. Sylvia Park. The Sylvia Park Handicap was run in two divisions. In the first division 1 Classic and Veyana were smartest, to • begin, Classic leading into the straight, ■ clear of Hunto, Beau Leon, Gay Rosette, 1 Sieglinde, and Flying Jay. Classic won ’ by half a length from Beau Leou, with Hunto a length and a quarter further back. Sieglinde was a close . fourth, Estro and Flying Jay almost in line, 1 and Veyana next. Classic was having his first race for some time, and was turned out in excel--1 lent order by F. Smith, who scored his 1 first success since February, in spite of the fact that he was the leading trainer in Auckland last season. Second Division. The second division provided an exciting finish, Rex Maitland just winning in 1 his first start for a year. Rara Avis, i Rex Maitland, and White Mark were smartest to begin., Rara Avis and White Mark going on in front. Nearing the turn Rara Avis drew out and he came into the straight two lengths clear of Expellant, with White Mark, Rex Maitland, Princess Vai and Selwyn. Inside the distance Expellant headed the tiring Rara Avis, but he failed to withstand a strong challenge from Rex Maitland, who got up to beat him by a nose. Monte Cristo came home strongly to be a neck away third, and Selwyn was fourth, ahead of Rara Avis, Princess Vai and Stratford. Narrow Win. The each way favourite To Kawiti scored narrowly in the Jellicoe Handicap. Erndale, Brazen Bold and To Kawiti began well, Surella taking the lead after a furlong from Brazen Bold, Te Kawiti. Mintlaw, Valamito and Vai Lu. Turning for home Surella just led from Brazen

Bold and Te Kawiti, with Mintlaw, \ almint, Vai Lu, Valamito . and . Erndale bandy, and the field bunching. Soon alter straightening up Te Kawiti ran to Surella and tile field spread across the course. Nearing the distance, Flying Acre challenged strongly on the rails,, but he could not quite reach Te Kawiti, wbo beat him by half a head. Royevrua came home solidly to be three-quarters of a length away third, and Valmint was fourth, followed by Surella, Young Paddon, Requiem, Erudale and Floodtidc. Double Figures. The veteran Biform won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup for the second year in succession, paying double figures. British Sovereign took up the running early from Golden England, Dark Rose and Pyrenees. The field was in very close order crossing the double, and going along the back the second time Pyrenees assumed command to lead up the hill from Biform, Golden England, British Sovereign and Dark Rose, with Lovelilt moving up. Pyrenees fell at the second fence on the hill, leaving Biform to lead over the stonewall into the straight, well clear of Lovelilt, with British Sovereign and Dark Rose some lengths away next. Lovehit made a game effort in the straight, but she could not reach Biform, who beat her by three lengths. Dark Rose was ten lengths away third, and British Sovereign was fourth, ahead of Mahala and Gar Vaals, who were well beaten. Allegretto, Golden England and Kinkle fell, and Clansman failed to complete the course. Fine Finishing Run.
