TREE-PLANTING TODAY
Buckinghamshire Beaches
Through the influence of the president of the Wellington branch of the Royal Society of St. George, 12 beech trees were sent by the mayor of his native town, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, for planting in the city. Because of a fire in the steamer six perished. It has been decided that the six surviving trees shall be planted on the citv reserve at the corner of Grant Road, ” Thorndon, and Wadestown Road today, at 11.30 a.m. The planting of these trees will mark the first occasion, as far as can be ascertained, that an English society has contributed to the beautifying of the city. The High Commissioner for the United Kingdom In New Zealand, Sir Harry Batterbee, and the mayor ot Wellington, Mr. Hislop, have each con sented to plant a tree. The ceremony, it is hoped, will prove memorable and impressive. The Church has been invited to co-operate, and a guard of honour for the Banner of St. George will be furnished toy girl guides and boy scouts.
