Interpretation Of Freezing
Workers’ Award
Decision was reserved by the Court of Arbitration yesterday in nn application for interpretation of a provision in the New Zealand (except Westland) freezing workers' award in regard to preparatory work. Mr. W. E. Sill represented the applicant workers’ organization. The respondent party to the dispute was the Gear Meat Co., Ltd., Wellington, represented by Mr. C. E. Wilkin. The question for decision was whether cooling lloor hands employed by the company dividing rides of beef into quarters and removing them from the chilling room before flic hour of 8 a.tn. should be ’paid fit overtime or ordinary rates. The dispute turned on the interpretation to be given to clause 3 of section 1 of the award, which allows employers to start men before the ordinary hours specified to do ‘.'essentially necessary preparatory work for the day’s operations” without payment of overtime, provided that overtime riuill be paid after the daily number of hours specified has been worked.
