Mutton And Beef Cheaper At Feilding
EASIER TONE EVIDENT . Dominion Special Service. FEILDING, August 23. An easier tone was evident at the Feilding stock sale today, neither sheep nor cattle realizing the high values of the previous two weeks. The clearance, however, was good with the exception of some lines of station cattle, for which the reserves were too high. In the fat sheep section a heavy entry of ewes proved rather more than market requirements, and prices, except for extra prime lines, declined. Wethers and hoggets were also easier. Extra prime wethers made 38/1 to 39/4, prime 35/ - to 3G/4, unfinished 27/4 to 33/-; prime hoggets 31/10, medium prime 23/1 to 24/10, others 22/1; extra prime ewes 35/10 to 37/10, prime 32/3 to 35/-, light prime 29/- to 31/7, unfinished 24/10 to 27/0; fat lambs 20/4. Hoggets made up the greater part ot the store sheep entry, and sold well, the demand for good wethers being strong. Very few breeding ewes were available. Best wether hoggets sold for 23/- to 24/9, gootl 20/3 to 22/9, small 14/- to 16/- ; very good ewe hoggets 35/4, second quality 31/9 to 32/6, others 24/- to 28/6; mixed-sex hoggets 25/6, black faced 19/7 to 19/10; good two-tooth ewes 39/-; five-year-in-lamb ewes 31/9 to 33/-; fair aged in-lamb ewes 23/8. A good selection of run cattle was offered, but only those in forward condition brought competition. Yearling Jersey heifers again found a ready market. Forward A.A. bullocks brought £lO/19/j good three-year heifers £B, smaller £6; two-year A.A. heifers £4/3/- to £4/10/-; two-year A.A. steers, very good £6/15/-, small £4/19/-; A.A. and Hereford cows £6; yearling Jersey heifers, good £5/5/to £6/10/-, others £2/4/6 to £5; empty heifers £5/4/-; works cows £3 to £4 17/6. Some select quality heifers were included in a moderate-sized dairy cattle yarding and sold very well. Very goojl springing heifers made £l2/15/- to £l5, second grade £lO/10/- to £l2/10/-, others £7/5/- to £10; best springing cows £lO to £l3, later calvers £5 to £B/10/-. Beef prices showed a decline on those of the two previous weeks, though prime lines of heifers commanded spirited bidding and good values. Extra prime heifers sold for £l2/17/6 to £l4/7/6, prime £lO/7/6 to £l2/12/6, lighter £5/17/6 to £9/2/6; prime cows £9 to £lO/12/6. medium prime £7/17/6, light £4/15/- to £7; prime oxen £l3/2/6 to £l3/7/6; vealers £4/15/- to £5/12/6; runners £7 2/6. The inquiry for pigs was particularly keen and prices were high. Weaners made 16/6; slips £l/13/-: stores £1 19/-; porkers £2/8/- to £2/13/-. Poultry prices were: Hens 3/2 to 4/5; pullets 5/6 to 7/-; cockerels 2/3 to 3/9; ducks 3/- to 3/2; turkey hens 2/3 to 3/9; gobblers 3/6 to 10/-; hens with chicks 6/- to 9/-.
