YOUNG MAN FINED
Bad Language Used On Tramcar Defendant used bad language all the way from Courtenay Place to Kilbirme, where he struck the conductor, said bubInspector G. H. Lambert, in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesteruaj, when a young man, Stewart Coveney, admitted assaulting a conductor and using indecent language in a traincar. He was fined £2 on each charge by Mr. Stout, S.M. e c Coveney was on the back platform or a Miramar tramcar, blocking the entrance to a doorway when requested by the conducted to move, said the sub-inspector, lie was asked to -move twice, but used the language complained of and at Courten av Place refused to leave the tram. Mr. W. B. Brown said Coveney had had a few drinks but was not under the influence of liquor. Counsel added that defendant told the conductor he would prefer to stand, but the conductor grabbed him round the neck and tried to put him off the car. “I don’t think the conductor was finite tactful,” counsel added, “and I don’t think it was true that, there was a string of oaths all the way from Courtenay Place to Kilbirnie.” Counsel submitted also that defendant did not strike the conductor, but merely resisted him.
