SPRING'S SHADOW

WHOEVER saw Spring’s shadow Touch the long lush grass, Saw blue mists sweeping skywards Above some tangled paws; Heard the rustle of the ti-tree And the wind among- the rushes, The sparrows* noisy chatter And the darting of the thrushes. Whoever saw Spring’s shadow Slant across the street, Saw three slender kowhai saplings Sway on dappled feet; Heard her long swift stride As she left the leaves a-quiver,. Heard the clacking of the flax And the murmur of the river. Whoever saw Spring’s shadow As it fell across the sky. Saw a small white snowdrop And a startled butterfly! —D.S.
