Hobson Street Gully
Sir, —While passing over the suspension bridge in Hobson Street this afternoon, I could not help but wonder at the attitude of the residents of the locality in permitting this potential beauty spot to be desecrated and converted into a particularly offensive eyesore. Rubbish, old tins, and old paper by the sackful has been thrown down the sides of the gully, and an unpleasant odour arises from the whole unlovely spectacle. I would suggest. Sir, that rather than allow this state of affairs to continue, it would be better for the city council to pipe the bottom of the gully and then to proceed to deposit clean spoil on the site, and eventually to provide a road, instead of the present pedestrian bridge. In the meantime, a notice prohibiting the depositing of rubbish should certainly be erected. — I am, etc.—PERIWINKLE. Wellington, August 22.
