SUCCESSFUL VENTURE
Commissioner Control Of ‘ Thames Borough
The success of commissioner control at Thames was endorsed by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Hamilton, during the second reading debate on the Thames Borough Commissioner Amendment Bill. The Bill extends commissioner control at Thames for another six years, and makes provision for the conversion of existing Thanres loans over a period of 40 years. Mr. Hamilton caused some amusement by suggesting that commissioner control, a compromise between dictatorship and democracy, had much to commend it. Though he did not advocate its wholesale adoption, he agreed with an interjector who described as as “a tempting idea.” “The proposals are reasonable, wise and necessary in the circumstances,” Mr. Hamilton said. The Minister in charge of the Bill, Mr. Parry, had given an assurance that there was substantial agreement among the people financially concerned, and he thought that the Thames Borough had done exceptionally well to make the recovery recorded.
■ “I want to wish the Thames borough good luck,” he added.
