PAKURANGA HUNT

Jellicoe Handicap Field PROSPECTS FOR SATURDAY Do mln ion Special Service. AUCKLAND, August 21. The new racing season in Auckland will be opened with the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. Excellent acceptances have been ■ received and the Sylvia Park Handicap. which has drawn 43 acceptors. will be run in two divisions, the totalizator on both closing before the running of the first. The course is in splendid order, having recovered wonderfully from the severe cutting up it received at the Great. Northern Carnival in •Tune, and unless there is rain during the week the going should be very good for the time of the year. The betting will be under the win and place system. The chief flat, event, the Jellicoe Handicap. has attracted n good field and bears a very open aspect. The topweight., Floodtide, was successful with 9.2 in 1938 and now has 21b. less. At his best he would take beating, but. he has not raced since pulling up tender after the Auckland Cup last December, and may not be strung right up. Royevrus is another who has been off the scene for some time, having had his last run in the Easter Handicap in March, but lie is very good when fit. He is trained at Cambridge, and little has been heard of his recent doing. Brazen Bold, who won the King George Handicap at Ellerslie in June with 7.11 is handily placed with 8.4 should take beating, as he excels when the sting is out. of the ground and should have the going to his liking. Two Recent Winners. Vai Lu and Young Paddon are recent winners, and with 8.4 both should have excellent chances. At Matamata on July 20 Vai Lu, 9.0, beat Young Paddon, 9.1, by a head over seven and a quarter furlongs and since then Young Paddon has run a first and a third at Rotorua. With even weights there should be little to choose between them nt a mile, and they should take a prominent part, in the finish. Our Jean has been off the scene since the nutumn and her prospects will depend upon her condition. She is capable of running very prominently if produced fit. Erlick runs a mile well and he won the York Handicap at Ellerslie iu June with 7.5. Following that he was beaten at Trenthnm, but at his last start he was second in the Centennial Handicap at. Matamata with 8.1 J. A repetition of his York Handicap form will make him difficult to beat. Orate has had a long sequence of unplaced performances and the fact that lie is unreliable at the barrier does not inspire confidence. However, he is very fit and is not. without, a chance if he jumps out smartly. The- good performer Valnmito has been off the scene since lust November and has been operated upon for respiratory trouble in the meantime. It is probable that, he may be fairly forward, but he may be in need of a race or two. The latest efforts ot Erndale have been disappointing, but. at his last start he ran fourth in the Hamilton Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Rapa, with 9.4. If he reproduces his best, he should fie difficult to beat. To Kawiti made very rapid improvement last season. his best effort at a mile being to dead-hent for third in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, and he should be worthy of respect if he strips fit. Chance For Flying Acre. Lack of recent, racing may bo against Mintlaw, hut. Flying Acre has been racing consistently and is handily placed with 7.10. Black Musk ran third last year with 7.3 - and on this occasion has 7.8. He has been schooled recently and at his first, attempt as a hurdler won at Rotorua last month. He is fit and it should not be for lack of condition if he fails to make a solid showing. Hunter’s Night is an improver and ran third nt Matamata to Vai Lu and Young Paddon, so that, he should not be without prospects under the lighter scale. Prival and Silver Glow were disappointing at Trentham last month and will require to do better if either is to succeed. Knight of Australia has reached the veteran stage and it. is scarcely likely lie will be able Io defeat, his younger rivals at. a mile. Kilcasb, winner of the Carbine Plate in June, is an improver and she may run prominently, specially if the ground is holding. Surella has' disappointed too often to he entrusted with much confidence and improvement upon their latesf form will be required from Kelly. Day Wind and Requiem if any of I hem is to win. The final gallops may shed some additional light on the prospects, though present indications are that fancies will take a wide range. Some wlm may be in demand are. Vai Lu. Young Paddon, Brazen Bold and Valmint. , Admirally Handicap. Some smart sprinters appear in the Admirally Handicap and special interest will be centred in Hie efforts of rhe three-year-old Lou Rosa. Grandora, Sir Cameron, Queen City and Happicoat. There is no doubt, that Lou Rosa is well above the average and his defeats in the autumn were due to the fact that he was not himself after a cold. The welter scale of weights may not. be entirely favourable to eaidy three-year-olds, but. sue-' cess with 9.5 may. not be beyond one of his class. Grandora raeed very consistently last season and should be capable of a good effort. Sir Cameron should be able to rise to greater heights this season than he did last, and he may shine over middle distances. Queen City and Happicoat are both smart and may have prospects with their light weights. The topweight. Mazir hits not raeed for some time and Aero King will require to do better than at Trentham, where lie disappointed. Proud Fox has not raced since the autumn and would appeal more over a longer journey. Orate is a possibility if he jumps out cleanly, and Sebrof should be prominent, if he runs up to his latesf. track form, which has been good. Our Jean .'111(1 Gamos are good performers, and Tooley Street is smart, whep in form. Valimeen and Maxam are both very speedy and Llandaff will have an opportunity to make amends for his defeat on the final day of the Great Northern meeting, when he was unable to show his best in the very heavy going. Llandaff may be better than ever this, season and will disappoint if be fails to prove a good winner. Brazilian Handily Placed. Although he was third on the first day at Trentham last month, Brazilian has not done as well as expected since deadheating for first with Aero King at Ellerslie in June. He has been working nicely and should have prospects if he repeats his best. Royal Message may be one of the best of those on the minimum. She has good condition anil ran third in similar company in June. Sir Lysander, Inver and Sure'lhi do not appeal, and the journey may be too short for The Cardinal, who is a slow beginner. Prival disappointed at. Trentham, and Tybalt has no recent form. The draw lor post positions may be an important factor in the big field, in which those to get in or near the front early may bo at an advantage. Popular fancies may be Lou Rosa. Brazilian, Sebrof and Llandaff.

Yearling for Art I.nion. Messrs. M. Polson. G. Price. F. Williams, ami M. MeCarfeti. who visited Scone last week to seieel a yearling for the "Win the War Effort’’ art union, found a splendid lot of youngsters to choose from, and their choice was the bay coll by imported Piccadilly from the Dinacre mare Ornum. dam of Maikai. Mr. Percy Miller, who is giving the. yearling to the Randwick Sporting Patriotic and War Fund Movement, insisted on the visitors making a second selection in ease anything should go wrong witli their first choice before the drawing of tluart union. Tim second selection was the bay colt by imported Pantheon from imported Rihstonc, by Blink.
