DANGER OF PARTY STRIFE
Sacrifice Of Country To Sectional Interests
“What has happened to countries like Norway and France with their Quislings and Lavals should make us all realize the danger that threatens every democracy in which party differences arouse such intense feelings that tlie ship of state may be left to sink abandoned in the sea of party advantage,” said Sir Thomas Hunter, principal of Victoria College, addressing the Royal Society of St. George in Wellington last night. “No democracy can afford to despise diversity of opinion, which is the very lifeblood of progress, but if this is to lead to such a passion for party that groups of citizens are prepared to sacrifice their country on the altar of party interests, there is no hope of survival for democracy. He serves his party best who serves his country best.”
