BATTLE IN ARCTIC

Sinking Of British Warships GERMAN REPORT OF ENGAGEMENT LONDON, June 17. The Berlin news agency in describing the sinking of the aircraftcarrier Glorious and other British ships pays tribute to the courageous fight put up by the British. “Toward the evening of Jiine 8,” states the report, “units of tlie German naval patrol in tlie.Arctic Sea met tlie Glorious, which was accompanied by two destroyers. 'Tlie Glorious attempted to let her planes take off, but tlie first German salvo prevented this being done. “Tlie destroyers threw out smokescreens, forcing the German guns to pause. Tlie destroyers fired torpedoes again and again, and tlie German units were compelled to manoeuvre skilfully to avoid them. Concentrated lire put one destroyer out of action and the waves closed over it. “'Tlie Glorious tried to make off, but could not get up full speed owing to the damage she had suffered. The fight continued till tlie glow of a fire was seen in tlie Glorious. Slowly the giant began to turn on Her side. Pouring out flames and smoke, she drifted with the wind and then sank. “The remaining destroyer continued firing from her aft guns although her forward guns had been silenced, (ill more salvos from the German guns ac last silenced her. The destroyer was in Hames and slowly began to sink. The waves closed over these brave opponents, too.” The news agency adds that before intercepting the " Glorious, tlie same German naval units sank a British tanker, a protective vessel, and a transport.
