RICCARTON GALLOPS

Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. Due of the inside grass tracks was open for fast work at Riccarton today, but as most of the horses booked to, race at the .South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting this week had a race at Ashburton last Saturday, there was very little galloping of any interest. Aggravate and Waka were sent out to jump six hurdles together, but after clearing the first, Aggravate ran off at the second, Waka carrying on alone to give a very satisfactory display. . Aggravate was taken back and, not making any further mistakes, completed his task in an encouraging manner. Cottingham was jumped over three of the steeplechase brush fences and cleared them without any apparent effort. This was the first jumping he has had since he was last raced in August, and it was the first experience over country of his rider, H. Hibberd, who will ride him at Washdyke. Riding engagements as follows have been made for Thursday’s races: —A. Stove, Waka; P. Spratt, Dinah Dhu, Peacock; H. Hibberd, Aggravate, Cottingham; R. Register, Nightbound, Ballad; C. Wilson, Midgard, Petersham, 'Trench Fight; A. Stokes, Iceland Spar, St. Cloud, Racewell; A. Messervy, Balmeuter, Schoolgirl, Rebel Star; A. E. Ellis, Rebellion; J Nicholson. Testator; J. Sullivan, Monastic; D. Corboy, Benevolent; W. Cornyns, Pink Lad; L. Robinson, Valens; A. Ingram, Arita; AL Billington, J?he Raker, Capricious; D. Mackie, Ripley; P. Boyle, Garonne; R. Mackie, Counter Lunch; C. Fox, Copyist; Ik. Jennings, Red Dragon: R. Caddy, Shangri-La, Chanteur. Peacock Waitaka and Lite Guard will represent the West Coast at this week’s South Canterbury fixture. Life Guard will in future be trained at Riccarton by E. Kingan, who will again make the centre his headquarters. L. J. Ellis suffered a slight recurrence of his old eye trouble after the Ashburton meeting on Saturday, and has had to forgo riding engagements made for the South Canterbury meeting.
