HASTINGS NOTES
Manawatu Candidates Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, May 14. A few of the strong team which goes from here to Manawatu tomorrow were given gallops this morniug under perfect conditions, but nothing out of the way was registered, though Authoress and Proclamation impressed, and , Nora Gregor, who may not race till Napier, executed a fast half-mile. Black Majesty and Dainty Dell, after running the initial quarter in 245, completed five furlongs comfortably in 66, with the latter again shading the black colt. At level weight Authoress and Proclamation ran six furlongs in 1.18, each furlong occupying 13. Oyer the final half-furlong Authoress obviously held the upper hand, though neither was ridden out. Padishah and Refulgent indulged in a solid ten furlongs working gallop, coming home the final five fur.ongs in 71. Isis, local candidate for the Wellington Trial in July, had her first run along since the Hastings meeting to record 531 for the half-mile. This fiily should later make the grade without difficulty. Master Cyklon, improved appreciably by Saturday’s Otaki race, was under strong restraint throughout to be kept back to Red Shoes over four in 53. The former from now on is worth serious consideration.
City Song, due any day, stood Laughing Song up four lengths at the start and came home on even terms at the end of half a mile in 52. • , Nora Gregor showed her brilliancy by recording 50 for four. However, she went from the six to the two, which is a trifle faster than from the four home. Endorsement, whose next meeting is Wanganui, was pulling throughout her half in 52j, to appear to be at the peak of her form. Junipers.
Dozie Boy, though through a mischance he ran off at the second of the brush double, gave a very fair display once round over the country, and may occasion surprise in Thursday’s hack steeples. Both Haile Selassie and Trailer were schooled over two hurdles separately, the former possessing the most confidence. Local horses engaged on Thursday at Awapuui will be ridden by: C. P. Sheild, Blue Tiger, Dozie Boy; P. Atkins, Arabic, Authoress; P. Burgess, Soho; A. Jenkins, Charade; C. L. Kerr, Begorrah; W. J. Broughton, Khurja, Indian Sun; >V. J. Mudford, Cherry Hunter, Gold Ballad ; B. H. Morris, Proclamation, llakahanga; H. N. Wiggins, Hunting Royal; J. Scullin, Tide and perhaps Curie. For some time more than ordinary interest or curiosity has been taken in Padishah’s programme this winter. His owner-trainer, Mr. J. A. Hennah, says that the triple National winner has been nominated for the Victorian National Hurdles and Steeplechase, . but nothing definite will be arranged till the appearance of the weights, and. if the same are satisfactory, it will even then mean a hurried trip to Melbourne, so the odds at present are that Padishah will again be at Riccarton this year.
