GROCERS’ APPEAL
Scarcity Of Wrapping Paper And String
PUBLIC CO-OPERATION
Because of the scarcity and high prices of wrapping paper and string, it was unanimously decided at a meeting of the Wellington Master Grocers' Association last night to appeal to Wellington district housewives to co-oper-ate with them as much as possible iu conserving supplies of these two articles.
It is pointed out that ordinary brown tvrapping paper costs 6d. per lb., and fine cotton twine has risen to the sensational price of 3/- per 11b. reel. It will soon be necessary to charge for wrapping parcels unless shoppers co-operate by bringing their baskets or bags. Regarding bread, it is against the law to use newspaper and as cap paper now costs 7sd. per lb. the position is even more serious. Lately the retailer’s profit on bread has been still further reduced.
