WATERLOO QUAY

Beautification Of Railway Land Improvements to the appearance of the sides of Waterloo Quay were discussed at a meeting of the committee of the Wellington Beautifying Society last night. At the previous meeting it had been decided to ask the Railways Department to tidy the land between the railway station platforms and the road.

Mr. H. L. Cummings reported that a sub-committee of the society had had a favourable reception by the general manager, Mr. E. Casey, who had promised the department's co-operation in the improvement of its lands. In the discussion of the land near the platforms it had come out that the appearance of the harbour board’s buildings on the opposite side of Waterloo Quay could be improved by the removal of some small buildings that were attached to the larger ones. Finance for labour was the main trouble. Mr. Cummings said he understood that the department expected to lease the land by the platforms. Mr. W. Murie remarked that two gardeners were employed to keep the surroundings of the Auckland station in order.

Remarking that part of the view of Hie front, of the railway station from Willis Street, Hie city’s longest street, had been blocked by the erection of the Hotel Waterloo, Mr. G. C. Beckett suggested that the society should oppose t'lie erection of the Government Printing Oilice on the site proposed which would obscure the remainder of the station, but Air. O. Gidall pointed out that money bad already been spent on the foundations, and the chairman, Captain S. Holm, said the society had endeavoured to have Willis Street carried straight through to the front of the station and failed. A letter from the Railways Department anonunced that Mr. G. H. Davis, land otlicer, had been appointed to represent the department on the committee.
