Power For Arbitration Court
A WARTIME MEASURE
An announcement that the Government had decided to give power to the Court of Arbitration to make general orders affecting the rate of remuneration prescribed by awards or industrial agreements or apprenticeship orders, was made yesterday by the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb. The factors to be taken into account in making such orders are the economic and financial conditions affecting trade and industry in New Zealand, the cost of living, and other considerations which the Court deems relevant. “The powers are regarded as a war measure, for the duration of the present war and the six months thereafter,” said Mr. Webb. “The decision follows a joint recommendation to the Government made by the New Zealand Federation of Labour, New Zealand Employers’ Federation, and the Manufacturers’ Federation. Regulations will be issued during the next few days under the Emergency Regulations Act, 1939.”
