COMPLAINT OF NEGLECT

Moffatt Street, Vogeltown About 10 residents of Moffatt Street, Vogeltown, waited on the'works committee of the Wellington'City Council yesterday afternoon to protest against the neglect of that thoroughfare. Mrs. 11. Cooper said that through neglect the street was very rough, and became cut up and slippery in stormy weather. Whenever it rained heavily there was a terrific amount of stormwater tearing down the street, carrying quantities of dirt on to private paths and properties. Moreover, as there were no footpaths the street "was positively dangerous at night. Mr. W. -J. Vaney said that not only were there no proper footpaths, but the street itself was not maintained. In some parts broom grew on it eight or nine feet high : as well as gorse and blackberry. . ( The chairman, Cr. W. Appleton, san, the council had decided to revert to the old system of having district roadmen who would be held responsible for the maintenance of the roads within their area. That was being done at once. “At: present we have no money for special works,” he said, “but we have the assurance of the mayor that if the rates come in satisfactorily this year we might get a further allocation for street works, so there is a reasonable prospect of Moffatt Street receiving some attention later on. In any ease it. will be cleaned up immediately.”
