GOING INTO CAMP

Petone’s Mayor Granted Leave For Duration The mayor of Petone, Mr. G. London, was last night granted leave of absence for the duration of the war by liis council as he will go into camp tomorrow. CT. J. C.'Burns, deputy mayor, will act for -Mr. London in his absence. Mr. London said liis relationships with the council had been happy. The council got its work through quickly and there was not one "nark” on it. Cr. Burns congratulated Mr. London on the example lie had given to Hie young people of Petone by enlisting. Mr. London lin'd made his office as mayor a fulltime job and great progress had been made under his leadership. They all regretted that at a time when he was making such good progress in local 'body work-, he should be taken from them. They could assure him that on his return he would find that the “house” had been kept in good order. Cr. .1. Cumming endorsed Cr. Burns’ remarks, It was a pity the war had started but now it had, it had to be seen through and the mayor, in this respect, was a man with the courage of liis convictions. Cr. Green said that the civic advancement of the past two years had been in many ways due to the mayor’s leadership. Cr. A. M. Ma.cfarlane ami the town clerk, Mr. 11. Firth, also spoke.
